Top 5 Peppermint Oil Uses in the Summer

Top 5 Peppermint Oil Uses in Summer

Peppermint essential oil is one of the most versatile essential oils. Let's explore the top 5 ways to use Peppermint oil on the hot summer days.

Peppermint oil for cooling

1. Cooling the Body

Whether you're at the beach, at the park for a family picnic, playing sport, watching the kids play sport or you're working hard in the yard, it's easy to work up a sweat in the Australian summer heat.

When it's hot, peppermint comes to the rescue. Did you know that using peppermint oil can actually reduce the surface temperature of the skin. So if your skin is feeling hot, and you want to feel cooler, using peppermint essential oil is the perfect way to bring down the heat.

There's 2 ways you can use peppermint essential oil to reduce skin and body heat on a hot summers day.

Either apply a drop of Peppermint oil on each wrist, or rub along the forearms. Some people also rub peppermint essential oil on the back of their neck.

Or, add several drops of peppermint oil to a spray bottle with water and spritz on the arms and legs. It's best to keep the eyes closed when spritzing, to ensure the oil doesn't get into the eyes.

When you apply peppermint oil directly to the skin or through the water spritz, you'll notice a cooling sensation on the skin. It feels a bit like the icy-cool feeling of the icy sports gels, though with a chemical-free refreshing peppermint scent.

Young Living peppermint oil drinking water

2. Refreshing Peppermint Water

Young Living peppermint essential oil can be added to food and drinks to flavour food.

On a hot summers day, peppermint water is fantastic way to not only enjoy a tasty refreshing drink, it's also healthy drink option that can replace soft drinks, sugar-filled iced-teas and cordials.

Everybody knows that drinking more water is great for health and everybody says when they try essential oil drinking water they find it easier to drink more water.

When using peppermint oil in drinking water, there's a 3 things you need to know.

1. The flavour of peppermint essential oil is strong. Some people love it, some people don't. That's just like any flavour - not everyone's tastes buds are the same. So give it a try to see if it's the flavour for you. Personally peppermint water is one of my favourites, I love it!

2. Use a small amount! For most people, one drop of peppermint oil to 250ml glass of water is a good flavour level. For some people, one drop to one litre of water is the flavour level they prefer. This is something that you'll need to try for yourself to find out your flavour preference. Though most people find that using more than one or two drops to a glass of water is too strong in flavour for them. So when you try peppermint oil water for yourself, start with one drop in a jug of water or large glass.

3. Make sure you're using an essential oil suited for use in food and cooking. Young Living peppermint essential oil can be used for food and drinks. You'll see the guidelines for use in cooking on the Young Living bottle label. Though please note that most brands of essential oils are not suitable for use in food and drinks. Most brands of essential oils, even oils labeled as 100% pure or organic are designed for aromatherapy purposes only, they should not be used in food and can be harmful if ingested in food. So make sure you're using an essential oil that's listed for use in food. With Young Living peppermint oil you can rest assured it's safe for use in food.

Young Living Peppermint oil for achy muscles

3. Relieving Sore Achy Muscles After a Workout

This summer after you workout, peppermint will be your best friend.

Whether it's after a workout at the gym, your morning run, your weekend warrior activities, sports match or time in the garden, the post-workout weary muscles are something we all dread.

Rubbing a few drops of peppermint oil on the sore and weary muscles after a workout or sport is great for muscular relief.

Most people love rubbing 2 or 3 drops of peppermint essential oil on the shoulders, back and knees.

Young Living peppermint oil can be used directly on the skin in a small amount of a few drops without dilution with a vegetable carrier oil. (Note: For children and people with sensitive skin, essential oils should be diluted with a carrier oil before use.)

Most other brands of essential oils are not suited for undiluted use on the skin and need to be diluted before use.

For a larger surface area for a back massage, you can make a massage oil by mixing peppermint oil with a vegetable carrier oil such as Young Living's V6 carrier oil, or a good quality vegetable oil such as coconut, olive or sweet almond oil.

Peppermint essential oil for energy boost

4. Energy Boost

Peppermint essential oil helps to boost feelings of energy. It's a great pick-me-up in the afternoon. It's a great kick-start for the day. It's a great pep-me-up to get you through a long day or a workout at the gym.

Peppermint not only boosts the energy levels that we feel, it's also great as a mental pick-me-up for mental sharpness and focus.

The 3 methods of essential oil use can be of benefit to help with an energy boost.

  • Diffuse peppermint oil.

  • Apply peppermint oil to the back of the neck.

  • Add peppermint oil to your drinking water.

Peppermint oil for temper tantrums

5. Calming Summer Temper Tantrums

The label of 'hot and bothered' can be applied to kids and adults alike on a hot summers day.

Have you noticed high temperatures have the tendency to push people off the emotional deep end?

When temperatures lead to tempers, peppermint comes in handy. It can help to turn 'hot and bothered' into "cool, calm and collected".

Smelling peppermint, whether from a diffuser or from application to the skin, peppermint essential oil's soothing-cooling properties will help to ease away adult and kiddie tantrums.
